Nearly a year after it first introduced a built-in crypto wallet, Opera has finally added Bitcoin support to its Android browser app which means users can now carry out Bitcoin transactions directly in the browser without needing any extensions or following any other complex processes.
“We believe that opening our browser to more blockchains, including Bitcoin, is the logical next step to making our solution more relevant to anyone who has a Bitcoin crypto wallet and would like to do things with their cryptocurrencies beyond just keeping them in an account,” stated head of crypto at Opera, Charles Hamel in a press release.
Previously Hamel stated in a blog post:
“We believe the web of today will be the interface to the decentralized web of tomorrow. This is why we have chosen to use our browser to bridge the gap. We think that with a built-in crypto wallet, the browser has the potential to renew and extend its important role as a tool to access information, make transactions online and manage users’ online identity in a way that gives them more control.”
The Oslo-based Norwegian company released a Beta version of its Android crypto app last Summer in 2018 in private beta, before launching it publically almost a year ago in December 2018.
Opera’s crypto wallet has only been supporting Ethereum over the past year, but both Bitcoin and Tron are now officially supported in the main Opera Android app.
