A top government official in the Czech Republic has resigned following a scandal over a multimillion-dollar Bitcoin donation. The crypto gift, reportedly worth $45 million, came from a convicted drug trafficker. The Justice Ministry accepted it without investigating its source. Public pressure and an active police inquiry have now led to the minister’s resignation just months before the next election.
Minister Resigns After Bitcoin Donation From Convicted Criminal
Czech Justice Minister Pavel Blazek stepped down after it was revealed that the Justice Ministry sold Bitcoin donated by a convicted criminal. By selling their almost 500 BTC, the ministry had raised nearly 1 billion Czech koruna (about $45 million).
Jirikovsky, who ran the noted dark website Sheep Marketplace, was the creator of Bitcoin. Illegal trade, especially of drugs, also took place on this network. Czech media outlet Denik N first revealed the link between the donation and Jirikovsky.
Blazek acknowledged that Jirikovsky’s lawyer had approached him with the offer in March. The minister accepted the donation without investigating its source. He told reporters, “I have no way to investigate the matter, and I wasn’t interested so many years after the case.”
Funds Intended for Ministry Projects
The Justice Ministry initially announced the sale on May 28. Officials stated the proceeds would support various initiatives. These included modernizing the justice system, tackling drug use in prisons, and improving housing for prison staff.
However, the revelation about Bitcoin’s origins prompted criticism. Opposition leaders labeled the move a scandal. The ministry’s lack of due diligence in accepting the donation sparked public outrage. An official police investigation is now underway.
Jirikovsky was convicted in 2017 for embezzlement, drug trafficking, and weapons violations. At the time of his arrest, Czech authorities seized 1,500 BTC. He was released from prison in 2021 and has since been attempting to recover the remaining Bitcoin.
Political Fallout and Minister’s Exit
With legislative elections scheduled in four months, pressure quickly mounted on Blazek. Prime Minister Petr Fiala, previously a close ally, distanced himself from the Justice Minister.
On May 30, Blazek submitted his resignation. “I am not aware of any illegal action. However, I do not wish to damage the reputation of the government or the governing association,” he said in his public statement.
President Petr Pavel accepted the resignation without objection. The ministry is yet to announce who will serve as Blazek’s replacement.
Legal Clarity and Crypto Regulation in Czechia
Earlier this year, Czechia introduced new legislation to regulate digital assets. On February 6, President Pavel signed a law aligning Czech crypto rules with the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation.
The purpose of the legislation is to explain crypto taxation clearly and support new projects. It covers standards that make reporting easier and support responsible management of assets. It is predicted that the investigation into Bitcoin’s use will prove how effective the new rules are.
