The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has once again slowed the progress of Ethereum exchange-traded funds. The regulator announced that it will extend the review period for BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust application, which seeks to add staking to the ETF. The new deadline is now set for October 30, giving the commission more time to study the proposal.

SEC Extends Review Period for BlackRock Ethereum ETF

In its latest release, the SEC confirmed it will delay its ruling on Nasdaq’s proposed rule change tied to the BlackRock iShares Ethereum Trust. The filing aims to allow staking of ETH within the fund, a move investors see as a game-changer for institutional adoption. Nasdaq first submitted the request in July, but the official process only started when it appeared in the Federal Register on August 1.

The initial 45-day decision window was set to expire on September 15. However, the commission said it required additional time to fully evaluate the potential impact of the change. By designating October 30 as the new deadline, the SEC ensures it can review the details and gather input before concluding.

This delay was widely expected. The commission has followed a similar pattern with other Ethereum ETF applications that sought to include staking. Market observers now believe the SEC could issue multiple approvals or rejections at once later in October.

Staking Decisions Loom Across Multiple Ethereum ETFs

The BlackRock delay comes as the SEC faces a packed calendar of Ethereum ETF rulings. CBOE’s proposal to include staking in the 21Shares Ethereum ETF has a final deadline of October 23. NYSE’s submission to permit staking in Grayscale’s Ethereum ETF will expire on October 29, one day before BlackRock’s new deadline. The timeline suggests the regulator may choose to bundle its decisions.

At the same time, Ethereum’s price performance reflects the growing anticipation. ETH has posted solid gains in recent months, with part of the rally linked to hopes of staking approval in ETFs. If granted, the move could bring new inflows and institutional interest into Ethereum markets.
