SHIB Team Freezes 4.6M BONE After Shibarium Bridge Hack Alert

The move to freeze 4.6 million BONE tokens came after the Shiba Inu development team alleged it found a significant security risk on the Shibarium bridge, following a warning issued by blockchain security company PeckShield about potential suspicious activities like validator compromise.

Shibarium Bridge Attack Triggers Emergency Freeze

PeckShield first raised the alarm, warning Shiba Inu developers of unusual activity on the Shibarium bridge. Shortly after, lead developer Kaal Dhairya confirmed that attackers had carried out a flash loan exploit. The exploit allowed them to buy 4.6 million BONE tokens while compromising validator signing keys. By doing so, the attackers gained majority control and attempted to drain bridge assets.

Because the tokens were delegated to Validator 1, staking rules locked them in place. This gave the team enough time to freeze the tokens before further damage. In response, Shiba Inu temporarily halted staking functions. Developers also moved stake manager funds to a hardware wallet secured by multisig protection. At the same time, they began a full audit of validator keys.

Security firms Hexens, Seal 911, and PeckShield have joined the investigation. Authorities were notified, and the team made a surprising offer to the attacker. They said no charges would be pressed if the funds were returned and even promised a bounty as an incentive. The priority, Dhairya stressed, remains the protection of community assets.

This attack comes after previous warnings of increasing scams within the SHIB ecosystem. Only a few days ago, developers marked fake Discord servers that use expired links to steal SHIB and other tokens. The bridge attack demonstrates the fact that, still, persistent threats to SHIB holders exist.

Shibarium Bridge’s Role in Expanding SHIB’s Layer-2 Ecosystem

Shiba Inu is expected to grow in the long run around the Shibarium bridge. It allows cheap and rapid transactions of SHIB, BONE, LEASH, and other tokens between Ethereum and Shibarium. Shiba Inu is driven into decentralized finance, metaverse ventures, and games with this efficiency.

Meanwhile, Shiba Inu developers have been implementing upgrades to the ecosystem. The LEASH V2 migration was recently outlined, and Dhairya described the idea of a fixed-ratio to cushion holders. Another significant upgrade was introduced by ShibaSwap, enhancing trading and liquidity management across multiple chains. These modifications demonstrate the aspiration of the project to gain a better position in the DeFi market.

The token holders were temporarily relieved by the freeze of 4.6 million BONE. BONE has increased by 41 percent within the last 24 hours with newfound confidence despite the breach. Nevertheless, the event is indicative of larger threats to crypto security. In August, blockchain company Arkham reported the largest Bitcoin heist ever, with 127,000 BTC stolen from a Chinese mining pool.

The Shibarium hack is not the final one, though the rapid reaction and emergency freeze demonstrate the SHIB team is concerned about protecting its ecosystem. Audits are ongoing, and investors are waiting with interest as the defense of Shibarium is tested.
