Ethereum’s Next Chapter: Vitalik Buterin Compares Low-Risk DeFi to Google Search

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin believes the network’s future lies in low-risk decentralized finance (DeFi). He compared its role to how Google’s search ads fuel the company’s global dominance.

Buterin Sees Low-Risk DeFi as Ethereum’s Core

In a recent blog post, Buterin argued that low-risk DeFi could become Ethereum’s financial backbone. He explained that stable services like payments, savings, and collateralized lending provide real economic value. These apps align with Ethereum’s founding values while also offering lasting revenue potential.

He indicated that DeFi protocols have become mature. Whereas risky experimental projects continue to fail, core apps like lending and stablecoin deposits continue to become more stable. As Butterin pointed out, the losses now are patented on the periphery of the ecosystem, not its core. This is a significant change compared with the initial years of unsustainable yield agriculture.

Moreover, Buterin emphasized that the real strength of crypto does not lie in the search for high returns. Rather, it is in the provision of access to global opportunities without the use of conventional finance. Basic applications, such as competitive savings accounts or secure lending, can find mainstream user bases and keep Ethereum ethically committed to decentralization.

Expanding DeFi’s Economic Role

Buterin also outlined some avenues of low-risk DeFi to continue to grow. One of the possibilities that he pointed out for the future is reputation-based lending. Better on-chain identity systems would see users gain access to undercollateralized loans with trust and credit history. It may serve as a new opening for individual persons and small enterprises.

The other area is prediction markets. Buterin proposed that these tools would be integrated with DeFi platforms, providing investors with additional risk-hedging opportunities. The users could bet against correlated events to cushion the portfolios and provide protection against the market.

Another point that he stressed was the necessity to go beyond USD dominance. More resilience could be provided by options like basket currencies, inflation-linked flatcoins, and personal tokens. By offering other value anchors, these systems would maintain system diversity in Ethereum.

To Buterin, this transition portrays a sustainable Ethereum. Similar to Google using ads, Ethereum may use low-risk DeFi as a reliable source of revenue. The plan correlates profitability to cultural value and provides users with useful and safe tools. This equilibrium, in his opinion, can make Ethereum develop and remain loyal to its decentralized purpose.
