ETH 3.0: Sharding May Return to Scale Ethereum to Millions of TPS

Ethereum researcher Justin Drake has only mentioned a groundbreaking proposal that could lead to an ETH 3.0 upgrade to solve Ethereum scalability issues. That social media announcement has sparked widespread speculation that sharding could return to pump up Ethereum’s transactions per second (TPS) in a big way.

On November 11, Drake tweeted on X (formerly Twitter) about an upcoming ‘ambitious’ initiative for Ethereum. He said he’d considered a ‘from-scratch’ redesign of Ethereum’s Consensus layer, which some believe could answer its scalability headaches. Drake’s full proposal is expected to be released on November 12 at Devcon in Bangkok.

Consensys CEO Joe Lubin suggested that Drake’s new proposal might bring back sharding. Now a previously rejected technique due to technical constraints, sharding could be brought back into play based on advances in zero-knowledge proof (zk-proof) technology. Lubin suspected that, on Ethereum’s underlying layer-1, a zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) could be developed directly on Ethereum’s layer-1, and multiple shots would be able to run identical execution sharts simultaneously.

However, Lubin believes recent breakthroughs in zero knowledge and optimistic scaling solutions can elevate Ethereum’s main layer. Ethereum could potentially support millions of TPS through volume aggregation in a single transaction, but Lubin warned that this would take years to reach.

Ethereum Community Buzzes Over Rumored ETH 3.0 Upgrade

The Ethereum community speculates whether Drake’s post is causing an upgrade, likely ETH 3.0. Ambient Finance founder Doug Colkitt posted on X that he heard a rumor about ETH 3.0’s “second merge into a new consensus aiming at 1-second block times with a native zkEVM equivalent.” Naturally, Colkitt was excited about what such an update could mean for Ethereum’s scalability, adding that it would ’allow arbitrary scalability’ and reduce dependency on layer 2 rollups.

However, not everyone in the community accepts the rumors. Of course, some skeptics pointed out that an upgrade of this magnitude would have created an apparent trajectory months in advance, with related Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) filed to exemplify its progress.

The Ethereum community is eager to hear Drake’s proposal, which will be unveiled at Devcon. The proposal could set a path for ETH 3.0 and Ethereum as a more scalable blockchain, which can handle millions of transactions per second, including sharding and zkEVM. The coming of sharding results from the fact that Ethereum is a community that debates the platform’s future, and it adds to the fact that the platform remains committed to creating and solving the scalability challenge.
